Mental Health UK works at home, in schools, and in workplaces across the UK helping people build the tools and condience to navigate life's challenges.

If you're able to support me, I'd really appreciate it. Your donation will help more people get the support they need, when they need it most.

Thank you!

One mile at a time

Friday 1st May

This May, I’m setting myself a simple but meaningful challenge: one mile a day, every day, for the entire month.

On the surface, a mile might not seem like much. It’s something many people walk without thinking twice. But for me, each step carries weight, purpose, and memory. I’m doing this in honour of my uncle, Eoghan Rua, who we lost to suicide in October 2023.

Losing someone to mental health is something that reshapes you. It leaves questions that don’t always have answers, and a quiet kind of grief that shows up in unexpected moments. It also brings a sharp awareness of how important it is to talk about mental health openly — not just when things reach a crisis point, but every day, in small, human ways.

That’s what this challenge is about.

Each mile is a moment to reflect, to remember, and to raise awareness. It’s about creating space — not just physically, but mentally — to think about how we support ourselves and the people around us. Walking has a rhythm to it, a steadiness that allows thoughts to settle. Some days will feel easy, others heavier, but that feels fitting. Mental health isn’t linear, and neither is healing.

If this challenge does anything, I hope it encourages even one person to pause and think about their own mental health, or to reach out to someone they haven’t spoken to in a while. A message, a call, a simple “how are you really?” can go further than we realise.

This is for my uncle.

This is for everyone who is struggling silently.
And this is for the reminder that even the smallest steps can move us forward.

One mile at a time.
