Healing Out Loud

Friday 14th Aug
For a long time, I’ve become very good at hiding how I actually feel.

I feel anxious almost constantly — around people, and even when I’m completely alone. On the outside, I can look calm, smiley and relaxed, while inside it can feel like my mind is trying to explode with every emotion all at once.

I’ve spent years trying not to cry, trying not to let my emotions take over, and trying to hold everything inside. But over the past year, I’ve cried more than I ever thought I would. And honestly, crying feels strange to me because I never used to do it. I was much more familiar with feeling numb.

But I don’t want to feel numb anymore, and I don’t want to keep pretending that everything is okay when it isn’t.

I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that I’m struggling with my mental health. It’s difficult to admit, but I know I need help. I need to learn how to understand what I’m feeling, regulate my emotions and, most importantly, stop being ashamed of needing support.

Over the years, I’ve become quite good at recognising when other people are struggling. I’ve always tried to be there when someone needs me. Through the profession I work in, I’ve seen people at some of the most vulnerable points in their lives — from mental health crises to serious, life-threatening injuries.

There’s one thing so many of those people have in common: they need someone.

Someone they can trust.
Someone who will listen.
Someone who can support them when they can’t support themselves.

That’s why mental health awareness matters so much to me.

Please check in on your friends. Check on your family. Ask someone how they really are. You never know what someone is carrying behind a smile, and I can almost guarantee that there is someone in your life struggling silently.

On 10th October, I’ll be taking part in a sponsored walk for mental health awareness.

If you’re able to donate, no matter how small, I’d genuinely appreciate it. And if you can’t donate, simply sharing this post could help reach someone who needs to know they aren’t alone.

Let’s talk about mental health. Let’s look out for each other. And let’s make it okay to say, “I’m not okay.”
