Why I'm Walking

People look at me and see someone with a family, a job, a life that's holding together — and assume that means everything underneath is fine too. It hasn't always been. There have been points where I was really low, and the hardest part wasn't the low itself, it was the shame. Going to a doctor felt like admitting weakness. So instead I taught myself to rely on no one but me, because that felt safer than asking for help and being a burden.
I don't think I'm unusual in that. There's a taboo we carry — this idea that we just have to be strong and push through — and all that does is add more weight to what we're already carrying. It wasn't until I found people around me I could actually lean on, and got real support, that things started to shift. Having my daughter changed things too. But I know not everyone has that network, or that access, and that gap is exactly why I'm doing this.
We've lost people to mental health. I see it all around me, especially since COVID, with the cost of living and everything else piling on — it adds up, and it wears people down in ways that don't just go away because time passes. I still have good days and bad days now. I probably always will. But if this walk is even a small drop in the ocean toward another person getting the support I eventually found, then it means everything to me. That's who I'm walking for — everyone still in it, and everyone working to make sure they don't have to be in it alone.
