My story

Background
I accessed Into Work during a very difficult period in my life. At the start of 2025, I was experiencing significant mental health challenges and was unemployed. I felt extremely low and overwhelmed, and knew I needed support quickly.
At that time, I was shy and withdrawn. Having attended a special needs school, I felt that my educational opportunities were limited. My confidence was very low and I had a quiet social life because of my anxiety. After the end of an important relationship, my mental health reached a critical point.
Into Work transformed my life. I got consistent encouragement and guidance from staff, particularly during moments of crisis. I remember one time when I contacted my Employment Specialist during a severe emotional episode. Through calm reassurance and breathing techniques, I was able to regulate my emotions. I continue to use these techniques today and have even shared them with others.
I even delivered a public speech in October to an audience of over 100 people, on a hospitality course my employer engagement officer referred me to. I was one of two people chosen from the course to speak. Although public speaking remains challenging, my Employment Engagement Officer helped me with drafting my speech and my Employment Specialist gave me practical techniques to manage my anxiety. Through Into Work, I also attended an open day where a professional speaker shared some expert public speaking tips. This really built up my confidence.
Since engaging with the programme, my confidence and communication has significant improved. I feel more able to speak with employers and actively pursue employment opportunities.
I’ve completed a one-month paid placement at a pub and a three-month paid placement at a London city hotel. I’m now in a full-time job, working as a barista. Because of my own lived experience and my desire to help others who may be struggling, I’m also working towards becoming a Mental Health Support Worker.
During COVID-19, my mental health was so bad I attempted to take my own life. It has really been a journey. I’m so grateful for services that supported me back then and feel that Into Work’s help since 2025 has been life-changing.
It is okay to not be okay. Support is available and no one should suffer alone.
