Running for mental health

Friday 15th Aug
We all know the benefits of running for our physical health, but all to offer we overlook the massive benefits running has on our mental health. I often say I don’t  know where I’d be if I hadn’t found running. As someone that has suffered with many mental health issues during my adult life I can speak from the heart about this.
After having my 1st child I suffered postnatal depression. This was my 1st encounter with my mental health issues. I took it hard as I had always been very strong and independent. All of a sudden I was dependent on my dear husband and my doctor. With the right help I got through it. Unfortunately many years later I had another bout of depression, again lasting about a year and again completely taking this ‘strong’ woman by surprise. Fast forward 5 years and I took up running, at the time for my physical health, little did I know then just  how much more than just my physical health would benefit.
After my brother was diagnosed with cancer at 48 (I was 46) I knew he had a fight on his hands and boy was I going to help him fight. Together with our family we supported him, for me getting out a run helped clear my head, and give me some space with my own thought. During his 5 year fight with cancer we lost both our parents, only to loose my brother a year later too. So I’m sure you can imagine, even for the ’strongest’’ person this was a lot. Lucky for me I have a wonderful support network around me and I’m strong enough now to talk about my struggles with mental health. Unfortunately that’s not the case for everyone, sadly there can still be a stigma around mental health … ‘give yourself a shake’. Believe me it’s not that easy! If you have a broken arm you can’t just ‘give it a shake’ it’s every bit as real, just because you can’t see whats broken doesn’t mean there’s nothing needing fixed! Together let’s talk about mental health, let’s support people, let’s listen.
So I’m going to dedicate all my running over the next year highlighting the benefits of running for your mental health as well as your physical health.
If you can, please support me.
