31 Miles in May: Move it for Mental Health

I'm fundraising for...

I am taking part in Move it for Mental Health! Please support me and donate today.

I'm handcycling in May to raise money for Mental Health UK. This cause is incredibly close to my heart. I've witnessed my loved ones battle severe mental health, seen them go into and come out of comas, and unfortunately, I've also lost loved ones to mental illness. I've also struggled with my own mental health. I'm determined to make a difference and support others who are facing similar challenges. Your donation will help provide much-needed support and resources for those affected by mental health issues.

As Mental Health Awareness Week is May 13th - 19th, I'd love to get to 31 miles by the 19th May and anything extra beyond the 19th would be an added bonus.

Thank you for your support!

My Updates

10 hot ones

Thursday 9th May
I had a goal in my head today, and smashed it. I really wanted to see 10 miles, I desperately needed a break at the 7 mile point, and that's okay. I had a longer break than expected but still finished the 3 miles and completed 10 miles today. My dog had an operation yesterday so I can't leave him inside for a week or so alone unfortunately so on my rollers it is for now. Still getting the miles done which is the important part.

Nearly 50% complete

Wednesday 8th May
6 miles done today in 50minutes, really happy with that. Starting to get my speed up as well. I made sure my tyres were pumped up before I started this morning, not sure if that helped a bit or if I was just feeling energised and better overall.

Struggling today

Tuesday 7th May
It's been a HOT weekend! I've been busy this weekend and haven't got on my cycle since the 3rd, feeling incredibly disappointed in myself and wanted to do at least 4 miles today but I've got no power in my arms today. (I managed 2) For those who don't know, I've got a spinal tumor and it effects my spinal cord and arms, some days after I 'over do it' I can experience swelling around it and the nerve pain, power loss and symptoms are greater, which is what I'm experiencing today after a busy long weekend. However I'm still on track so any extra miles will still be a bonus at this point so I'm still happy and need to keep reminding myself I'm new to handcycling! Also repping the Mental Health UK Top they sent me out for hitting £50. I'll get a medal once I've hit £100 - but it's not about that though it's about all those in need ❣️❣️❣️

Back on the rollers!

Friday 3rd May
Oh what happened to the weather! I was really hoping to get out today as I didn't manage to get out yesterday unfortunately, I was quite poorly. However I'm so grateful to have indoor rollers so I can still do my cycling indoors and after a busy day I've just done 3 miles. Super happy with tonight's cycle. I was testing out my gear system tonight, I have 21 gears on this handcycle! So still getting use to using them all 🥴 it's rather easy really and I can get some speed on this thing, I think my arms just lack the power to maintain the speed. 5miles already completed and its only 3rd May! Let's keep this up!

1st May

Friday 3rd May
What a start to May! I kicked off this challenge with a gorgeous evening out to a local park and although it was super busy with everyone enjoying the sun 🌞 I managed a casual 2 miles round the park. Happy with that! Happy May everyone! (Also got a crazy amount of compliments on my handcycle, apparently it's super cool and everyone wants it! Haha)

29th April

Monday 29th Apr
Another day of indoor handcycling training for my May challenge in support of Mental Health UK. Today, I managed to clock in another 4 miles. I'm beginning to find my rhythm and gradually reduce my mile times. It's still tough on the arms but seeing this progress is incredibly satisfying, and it's inadvertently contributing to my own mental health and fitness levels. In May, when my challenge officially starts, I'll be getting outside to do my cycles whenever I can, hopefully more days out than in.

Indoor cycle

Friday 26th Apr
Yesterday I did some indoor cycling on some rollers. I'm still trying to figure out how to use the cadence and speed sensors properly. The cadence sensor is working well, the speed sensor needs some tweaking, I may need to work out how to change the wheel size on the app as it only tracked that I did 4miles in 1hour with an RPM average of 85 which doesn't quite add up.
(This was using the Wahoo app)

Today I'm going to use my igps bike computer and hopefully that should track it more accurately.

However, 4miles is still great for me as I only took up handcycling a week ago, so overall I feel I'm making great progress regardless.
