I am taking part in the 31 Miles in May for Mental Health UK to help bring awareness to MHUK and Borderline Personality Disorder. It is important to raise awareness and stop the stigma that surrounds mental health and I’d love it if you could help support me in my quest to help!

What is BPD?

Wednesday 23rd Apr

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a complex and often misunderstood mental health condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, and relates to others. It's estimated that around 2-3% of adults in the UK live with BPD, though the number may be higher due to misdiagnosis or underreporting.

People with BPD often struggle with intense emotions, unstable relationships, fear of abandonment, and a fluctuating sense of self. One moment, they may feel calm and connected; the next, they may experience deep despair or anger. These emotional swings are not mood swings in the traditional sense and they're often triggered by interpersonal stress or perceived rejection or other emotions triggers.

Self-harm, impulsivity, and difficulty trusting others are common symptoms, and many people with BPD also struggle with co-occurring conditions like depression, anxiety, or substance abuse disorders.

Despite its challenges, BPD is treatable. Behavior Therapy along side medication has shown strong success in helping individuals manage their symptoms and lead more stable, fulfilling lives. With the right support, people with BPD can build healthy relationships and improve their emotional well-being.

It's crucial to approach BPD with compassion and understanding, not judgment. Everyone’s story is different, and healing is possible. By talking openly and honestly, we can reduce stigma and help those affected feel seen and supported.

My Story

Wednesday 23rd Apr
I was diagnosed with BPD in my early 20s and I wish I could say that was the point where everything started to make sense but it in reality it tore my world apart, it was some of the hardest and confusing years of my life.

6 years later I’m still affected on a daily basis but thanks to the support of my friends, the NHS, some medication and therapy I can say I live a happy and moderately normal life. This condition is becoming more common in the UK with new diagnosis’s increasing on a rapid basis and there needs to be more information, understanding and support in regards to the help available! Being diagnosed was not the end of my life like I had once thought, in fact it makes me who I am today and although some days are harder than others I wouldn’t change a thing about my little life. And this is why I want to raise awareness and help end the stigma surrounding mental health
