Why am I choosing this fundraiser

Saturday 14th Sep
Mental health and more so the effects of poor mental health have been at the forefront of the last 11 years of my life.

My brother took his own life 11 years ago. When i was 6 months pregnant.
This turned everything I knew upside down.

Another of my siblings had also been struggling at this point and was receiving help - there was no way  I thought that I would have two siblings in a similar situation at the same time.

It was a massive shock to find out that my brother had died, and being one of the ones that needed to deliver this message to the sibling that was struggling was really really hard. All while pregnant and all while our mum was seriously ill in hospital.

The next few weeks are a blur really, dealing with the inquest, arranging a funeral. Trying to “keep calm” as everyone told me I had to for the baby.

When it came time to have the baby the birth was an emergency c section and very traumatic, my little baby was really poorly and we had to wait and see if he would survive the first 24 hours. He then stayed in NICU for 2-3 weeks.

At first I thought I was ok and was coping but it turns out I wasn't - as time went on I began worrying about anything and everything, I couldn't sleep, was crying all the time and having flashbacks of how my brother was found.

This went on then hit a crescendo; I decided to go to the doctors for some help.
I was put on antidepressants and thats what would lead to the next 10 years managing my own mental health, having huge dips, breakdowns and not being able to function at times. Being triggered by other bad news was and is a big thing for me. My mum passing away one year after my brother after a long illness was a struggle, keeping strong for a child is hard & finding out a nephew had died in similar circumstances to his Dad also hit me extremely hard.

We still are affected; my other sibling still struggles and is a constant worry. I almost feel like I will crumble If i have to do it all over again and that scares me.

We didn’t get counselling as a family, I really wish I had accessed something like Mental Health UK. We didn’t talk, it kind of wasn’t spoken about. But I could never get my brother off my mind and all I wanted to do was discuss him.

After 10 years; I am no longer taking anti depressants. I have come to a point where I feel strong enough to try without them. I talk less about him but think about him often.
I take myself to the gym most days to work on my brain more than my body.
I go for my mind my arse just comes along for the ride.

Anyone can be affected by their mental health. And I want to raise money to support people who have been in a similar situation and might just need that bit of help to get back on their feet.

So my arse is going for a 20k ride to hopefully hit my target.
Please donate whatever you can. It will be most appreciated.
Thank you
